Actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson who plays gay character Mitchell on Modern Family kind of came out in real life to his father when he was 14. He told Aisha Tyler on Girl on Guy that it was “humiliating.” When caught shoplifting gay porn at an adult store, Ferguson’s father was called in and was shown the “nature of the material I was stealing,” said the actor, who considers getting caught with the gay porn contraband part of his coming out process.
But being caught red-handed was only part of the process, because it wasn’t until in his later teen years that Ferguson made it official and came out to his father. “And it was like he needed to be told three times… [When I was 21] he asked me if I had a girlfriend.” Now 38 years old, Ferguson is married to lawyer Justin Mikita.
