The midcareer Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson went out of his way to soften his image, transforming himself from a scary and powerful wrestler-type to a cuddly domesticated sweetheart in films like The Tooth Fairy. It worked so well that Dwayne can do anything now–even call himself “The Rock.” (He was trying to be just Dwayne Johnson for a while, remember?) Or forget about calling himself “The Rock,” he can confidently call himself The Villain. He knows his popularity is beyond reproach, so given the choice of playing the hero in Shazam or the dastardly villain Black Adam, Johnson after years of Twitter teasing announced he’ll take the Black Adam part. That’s right: The Rock will play the bad guy. How excellent.
That leaves the hero role open. Everybody in Hollywood wants to be the next Robert Downey Jr. in Iron Man. (At least they’d like the money.) Is Shazam that kind of role? Could be. And with a nemesis like Dwayne Johnson the role just got even richer. Who will be Shazam? Look for a relative unknown, some Hollywood people are whispering, hand-picked by The Rock.
