NSFW–Not Safe For Work. It’s an acronym that will need an upgrade after Nicki Minaj released her new Anaconda video. The tween-level appeal of lyric rhymes like “don’t want none, unless you got buns hon” slides into “Oh my gosh look at her butt” and the howls of parents everywhere are heard silently raging in the background. Besides, “Oh my gosh look at her butt” is an unnecessary instruction–there’s hardly anything else to look at!
Minaj furthers her intellectual argument for the acceptance of diverse body types by singing (kind of): “F&%$ the skinny (rhymes with) witches in the club / I got a big fat ass.” And so on. (It’s hard to argue the fact, BTW.) Maybe the new acronym is NSFS? Not Safe For Society? That’s not our opinion, but it’s surely one you’re going to hear. And not just loud protests from the usual suspects–groups like Moms Against Sex, etc.–but also from regular moms and even a few libertarians. Minaj doesn’t just push the innuendo envelope, she lights it on fire. Because there’s nothing suggestive about Anaconda–it just is. Controversy has historically been good for sales. And Anaconda sure does invite controversy. It’s a big FU to modesty and what many people consider social norms. And then there’s rapper Drake there sitting in the chair–is Minaj empowered as she twerks around him, or is he in charge? That’s another question sure to spark some arguments.
