Craig Ferguson’s replacement as host of The Late Late Show on CBS has been named: James Corden. Who? you might ask. Much like Ferguson was when he took the reins of the show in 2005, Corden is an imported Brit with a relatively low profile in the United States. The creator of hit UK comedy Gavin & Stacey has also won a Tony Best Actor award for his performance in One Man, Two Guvnors.
Will this change–along with Dave Letterman’s retirement–radically alter late night? Probably not. The late-night talk show landscape will be as highly competitive as ever–with much of it seeming to do little else except produce You Tube clips. But between Corden, Colbert, Fallon, Kimmel, O’Brien and Myers, it continues to be dominated by middle-aged straight white men.
