In the series finale of The Carmichael Show “Gold Digger,” while Jerrod discovers something about his girlfriend Maxine’s financial situation that makes him feel uncomfortable, Jerrod’s brother Bobby (Lil’ Rel Howery) brings home his new girlfriend Janet to meet the family. Both scenarios spark a discussion about the effects of money on relationships.
Janet is portrayed by Margaret Avery. The 72-year-old actress is known for her roles on Being Mary Jane (Helen Patterson), and in the films Meet the Browns (Sarah) and The Color Purple (Shug Avery), among several others. Avery will appear next on the big screen in the 2018 action/thriller Proud Mary starring Taraji P. Henson.
