Kirsten Gillibrand is a Democratic Senator and former Representative from New York who is running for a second senate term in three years. She was elected to the 110th Congress in 2007, then in 2009 resigned to become a U.S. Senator (she filled the vacancy caused by the resignation of then-Senator Hillary Clinton). Gillibrand was then elected in a special election in 2010 for the term which ends in January 2013. She was born in Albany, New York in 1966; received an A.B. from Dartmouth College in 1988; and a J.D. from the University of California Los Angeles in1991.As of March 31, 2012, Gillibrand has raised more than $11 million (82% from individual contributions).
Her Republican opponent George Maragos, the current Nassau County Comptroller, is currently self-financing his campaign, reporting $1.1 million in the coffers. Maragos was born in Greece in 1949; his family immigrated to Montreal, Canada in 1958. He graduated from McGill University, earned an MBA in Finance from Pace University, became a naturalized American citizen in 1985, and worked on Wall Street for the past 35 years.
