ABC 20/20 correspondent Amy Robach interviews Elizabeth Kendall, former long-time girlfriend of the late, notorious serial killer Ted Bundy. She reveals – with her daughter Molly – that it’s strange to look through old photos of him with her and her daughter, who was a child at the time, “to see him being silly.”
Kendall’s 1981 memoir, The Phantom Prince, about her six-year intimate relationship with Bundy, has been recently updated to include never-before-seen photos, and a new chapter from Molly, who has not previously shared her story.
The book inspired of the 2019 Amazon Original docu-series Ted Bundy: Falling for a Killer, which includes interviews with other survivors who have “come forward for the first time in a docuseries that re-frames Bundy’s crimes from a female perspective.”
During the 20/20 interview, Molly Kendall recalls when she started to put the pieces together. “When they had a profile of him, I brought up the similarities to him,” Molly Kendall said. “I said, ‘This guy’s name’s Ted. Your name’s Ted. This guy has a Volkswagen. You drive a Volkswagen. You know it’s you,’ and he just laughed. [He said], ‘No, Monkey, of course, I would never do anything like that.’”
Bundy was executed by electrocution in 1989 at Florida State Prison. He was 42. His body was cremated and his ashes, in accordance with his will, were scattered over the Cascade Mountains in Washington, where the remains of at least four of his victims were found. The night before his execution, he confessed to 30 homicides.
