Supermodel/actress/social superstar Cara Delevingne gives “selfie” a whole new twist in a high-speed new video for Volkswagen. Trying to drive home the theme that pigeonholing people can be dangerous and just plain wrong, Cara plays many of her different selves in a short spot for the new VW T-Cross. But the most captivating Cara occurs right at the beginning, when Cara — in a cool hat — sits playing the drum kit like the Beatles beat man Ringo Starr. (See video of Ringo at the kit below.)
It’s when she’s banging away Ringo-style at the drums that Cara’s super selfie takes place, because the next Cara identity is Cara the photographer — who is taking a photo of Cara the drummer. (Cara the photographer shoots Cara the drummer with a 35mm camera too, not an iPhone — we really are more complex that we know!)
Yes, we do recognize that for many fans the most captivating moment of the new video will not be Cara the drummer, but rather Cara the runner who bends over deeply to allow a very good view of her famous cleavage. But we still love Cara “Ringo” Delevingne. And her celebration of diversity, even in a single multitude. As the American poet Walt Whitman said: “I contain multitudes.”
