In the Fresh off the Boat episode “Under the Taipei Sun” (the show’s 100th episode!), before Eddie Huang (Hudson Yang) goes to Taiwan for the cultural exchange program his parents try to give him advice, reminding him of how hard it was for them when they came to America for the first time. Eddie ignores their advice and gets into trouble in Taipei. When he ends up separated from his group with no money and next-to-no language skills, a noodle street vendor named Willie comes to his rescue.

Street vendor Willie is portrayed by Simu Liu. The Canadian-born actor is best known for his roles on the CBC series Kim’s Convenience (Jung), Taken (Faaron), and Blood and Water (Paul Xie), among others. Liu immigrated from China at the age of 5 and was raised in Ontario, Canada. Fun facts about Liu: He was a shirtless greeter for Abercrombie and Fitch (you can see why in the photo below) and was Pete Wentz’s stunt double for the Fallout Boy music video “Centuries.” Fresh off the Boat airs Fridays at 8pm on CBS, right before Speechless.
