Self-proclaimed democratic socialist Bernie Sanders will again steer the political narrative leftward for the Democratic Party after announcing his redux run for President in 2020. Sanders’s bruising 2016 primary run battered Hillary Clinton’s reputation among capitalism’s skeptics. Sanders did enough damage linking Clinton to Wall Street and big money that many thought he helped open the door to Donald Trump‘s so-called populism. This time around there is no Clinton to fight and Sanders, a prototypical Trump antagonist who proudly wears the”socialist” in his title, will try to take out Trump with an agenda he says most of America now supports.
[Where We Go from Here, Bernie Sanders]
“Three years ago, during our 2016 campaign, when we brought forth our progressive agenda we were told that our ideas were ‘radical’ and ‘extreme,’” Sanders emailed supporters. Three years later, Sanders says, “all of these policies and more are now supported by a majority of Americans.” Sanders is referring to broad support in polls for progressive staples such as more accessible health insurance, higher taxes on the rich, and regulations aimed at slowing climate change.
