On the Teen Mom OG episode “I Choose You,” while pregnant married couple Catelynn and Tyler Baltierra talk about their month-long trial separation from each other, Gary Shirley returns home after getting a vasectomy. Gary is a 32-year-old father of two (Leah, 9, with ex Amber Portwood, and Emilee, 3, with wife Kristina). When Gary tells his wife, “I went through this for you,” she corrects him and says, “No, you did this for us.” When Kristina asks Gary if the procedure was as bad as he thought it would be, Gary says it was exactly as bad as he thought it would be and provides details of the pain. That would have been a good time for Kristina to remind Gary that suffering a miscarriage (like she did recently) isn’t a walk in the park either — but Kristina is too nice to bring it up. Gary makes up for the complaints by saying the real reason he had the vasectomy was because they’re done having kids and he doesn’t want to put Kristina and her body through that again.
In September 2017, Gary Shirley told Intouch Weekly that he would love to have more kids with his wife Kristina Anderson but “Kristina had gotten her tubes tied.” He said there was the possibility of having them untied but there was also the possibility of fostering and/or adopting children. Perhaps the couple will return to the idea of fostering or adopting in the future. Teen Mom OG airs Mondays at 9 pm on MTV, right before Teen Mom: Young + Pregnant.
