In the New Amsterdam episode “Every Last Minute,” Max (Ryan Eggold) meets a patient’s wife, Mrs. Ryland. She’s been to the hospital before. Her husband, who likes steaks, cigars, his mistresses and money, has had a heart attack before and was saved by Dr. Merritt, who’s no longer at the hospital. Max introduces Mrs. Ryland to Reynolds (Jocko Sims) who is building his cardiothoracic department and surprising everyone by hiring women of color first.
[One of the best John Hughes movies of all time]
Mrs. Ryland is memorably portrayed by Laila Robins. Robbins is known for her roles on Deception (FBI Agent Deakins), Quantico (General Richards), Murder in the First (Jamie Nelson), Homeland (Martha Boyd), and in the films True Crime with Clint Eastwood (Patricia Findley), An Innocent Man with Tom Selleck (Kate Rainwood), and Planes, Trains & Automobiles (Steve Martin’s wife Susan Page, see link above and watch it!), among others. New Amsterdam airs Tuesdays at 10pm on NBC, right after This Is Us.
