Happy Together is about a young “ordinary” couple in the suburbs who take in a pop star when he needs to hide from the paparazzi. The celebrity Cooper James (Felix Mallard) is a client of accountant Jake (Damon Wayans, Jr.) who lives with his wife Claire (Amber Stevens West). In real life, West’s mother is black (model Beverly Cunningham) and her father (radio announcer Shadoe Stevens) is white. But on Happy Together, Claire’s mom Bonnie is white and her father (Victor Williams) is black — and they tend to wear matching outfits.
Bonnie is portrayed by the hilarious Stephnie Weir. She’s known for her roles on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (Karen), Life in Pieces (lactation expert Bernadette), The Comedians (Kristen Laybourne), and MADtv (impersonations including Anna Nicole Smith, Reba McEntire) from 2000-2006, among others. Happy Together airs Mondays at 8:30pm on CBS, right after The Neighborhood and right before Magnum P.I.
