In the Law & Order: Special Victims Unit episode “Mama,” an Alzheimer’s patient named Madeline Thomas claims she was raped in the assisted living home where she lives. Her daughter and the SVU team take her claim seriously — but her illness keeps her from remembering details and casts doubt on the case.

The Alzhemer’s afflicted woman, Madeline Thomas, is portrayed by Fionnula Flanagan. The Irish-born actress is known for her roles on Defiance (Nicky), Lost (Ellie Hawking), Brotherhood (Rose Caffee), Murder, She Wrote (Eileen O’Bannon), How the West Was Won (Aunt Molly Culhane), and Rich Man, Poor Man (Clothilde, for which she won a Primetime Emmy), among other. Flanagan is also recognized for her roles in the films Transamerica (Elizabeth), Four Brothers (mother Evelyn Mercer), The Others (Mrs. Bertha Mills), and Waking Ned Devine (Annie O’Shea). Law & Order: Special Victims Unit airs Wednesdays at 9pm on NBC.
