The new Shondaland drama on ABC For the People is set in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York a.k.a. “The Mother Court”. Six young lawyers work on opposite sides of the law and handle really high-profile federal cases. Their boss is Jill Carlan, Federal Public Defender.

Federal Public Defender Jill Carlan is portrayed by Hope Davis. Davis is known for her roles on Wayward Pines (Megan Fisher), American Crime (Steph Sullivan), The Newsroom (Nina Howard), and in the films The Secret Lives of Dentists (Dana Hurst), About Schmidt (Jeannie Schmidt), Joe Gould’s Secret (Therese Mitchell), and The Daytrippers (Eliza Malone D’Amico), among others. Fun fact: Davis made her debut in the 1990 film Flatliners with Kiefer Sutherland, Kevin Bacon and Julia Roberts. For the People airs Tuesdays at 10pm on ABC, right after black-ish.
