The Rolling Stones famously recorded the monstrous rock and roll milestone Exile on Main Street in the South of France at Villa Nellcote, a place/castle Keith Richards rented so the boys could get out of England in 1972. The album is a critical moment in rock history — it’s when “rock star” became decidedly an a outlaw title, a glamorous stew of rule-breaking and creativity. Exile was one of its chief themes. The Beatles were pop stars as much as rock stars. The Rolling Stones sang about the devil.
Exile On Main Street [Remastered]
Now rock star Ryan Adams, the sui generis musical artist, is set to play a full-length cover of Exile on Main Street. (It’s hard to imagine anybody else trying, and that includes Dave Grohl, who’s up for anything.) Adams and super-producer Don Was are putting together what will doubtless be a monster show in New Orleans May 5. Adams is calling it “Exile on Bourbon Street“, and it’ll feature big contributions from the Crescent City musical elite. The event will take place at the Saenger Theatre, more details here. One thing we know, and which a lot of New Orleans night owls will agree with, is that the concert will get going with one of the great lines in rock history from “Rocks Off”, the album’s starter: “The sunshine bores the daylights out of me.”
