In the unconventional Law & Order: Special Victims Unit episode “Something Happened,” Lt. Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) “must reveal secrets from her past to help a rape victim.” The victim, Laurel Lester, can’t remember anything about the terrible, traumatic night before she was found. When Laurel’s sister Leah (guest star Joanna Going) is called in to help with the investigation, Benson suspects that Laurel has been raped before. After Laurel yells at Benson “You can’t save me, you can’t make the pain and humiliation go away,” Benson tries to console the woman by telling her with conviction, “Your soul is not dead.” It’s a powerful performance by both women.

Laurel is portrayed by Melora Walters. She’s known for her TV roles on Big Love (Wanda Henrickson), Threat Matrix (Lark), L.A. Doctors (Felicity), and Roseanne (Debbie). On a personal note: Walters is the mother of two children with her ex-husband, actor Dylan Walsh of Nip/Tuck. Law & Order: Special Victims Unit airs Wednesdays at 9pm on NBC.
