There are three talented artists left on Miley Cyrus‘s team on The Voice, Season 13 — country girl Ashland Craft, and powerhouse singers Brooke Simpson and Janice Freeman. Everyone has a story to tell and Janice isn’t afraid to let her emotions shine through when she’s singing on stage. For her Top 11 live performance, the former single mom and cancer survivor sings the Collective Soul 1994 song “Shine.”

Due to the lyrics of the song which include the mention of heaven (‘Oh, heaven let your light shine down’), Collective Soul was sometimes referred to as a Christian band, although frontman Ed Roland has denied the label. (Led Zeppelin sings about heaven too and no one confuses them for a Christian band.) However, Collective Soul rhythm guitarist Dean Roland (Ed’s younger brother) has referred to the song’s chorus as “basically a prayer.” Note: The Rolands’ father was a Southern Baptist minister. Collective Soul is currently working on their tenth studio album which will be released in March 2018. The Voice airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 8pm on NBC.
