On September 25 Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers played at the legendary LA venue The Hollywood Bowl. Video of that show is now being widely shared — and below is the two song coda from that poignant night, Petty’s last show. “You Wreck Me” and “American Girl,” a double dose of classic Petty if there ever was one. Listening to “American Girl,” Petty fans just hope she was right — “that there’s a little more life somewhere else” for TP.
Petty was wrapping up his 40th Anniversary Tour at the Hollywood Bowl. Music industry sage Bob Lefsetz wrote a great homage to Petty after he returned from the show, praising Petty to the rafters for a lifetime of tremendous work and innovation. Lefsetz, whose influential newsletter has wide reach in the music world, started his piece with words that have become incredibly sad after Petty’s passing: “He’s the last rock star. And he’s finally comfortable in his own skin,” Lefsetz wrote. That “finally” hurts the most, as the long hard beautiful journey of Tom Petty ended so soon after. Here’s “Free Fallin'” too:
