In the Ray Donovan episode “Shelley Duvall,” when Ray (Liev Schreiber) isn’t spending precious time with his wife Abby (Paula Malcomson) whose cancer has returned, he’s on the job. While running interference for Hollywood actress Natalie James (Lilli Simmons), Ray gets a warning from Sam (Susan Sarandon) about getting too close to Natalie. A reference to actress Shelley Duvall is mentioned.
[Duvall played Steve Martin’s good friend Dixie in Roxanne]
Shelley Duvall, 68, is known for playing eccentric characters in films including The Shining (Wendy Torrance), Popeye (Olive Oyl), Annie Hall (Pam), Roxanne (Dixie), and Robert Altman’s Nashville (L.A. Joan) and 3 Women (Millie Lammoreaux), among others. Duvall hasn’t acted since 2002. In November 2016, she appeared on The Dr. Phil Show where she said “I am very sick. I need help,” and revealed many of her beliefs including that her Popeye co-star Robin Williams is not dead but rather “shapeshifting.” Ray Donovan airs Sundays at 9pm on Showtime.
