On The Voice Season 12, Rhode Island native Johnny Gates sings Rod Stewart’s “Maggie May” for his Blind Audition. It was a good choice. All of the coaches except Adam Levine turn around for the 31-year-old singer. When Gwen Stefani asks Johnny about his background, he explains that he’s been in bands his whole life and that he and his band opened for Rod Stewart last summer.

Johnny Gates is in the three-man band Runaway Saints. Johnny is lead vocals and guitar, Jamie Jarbeau is on bass, and Matty Scanlon on drums. They moved to Nashville together before heading to Los Angeles where they currently live. Runaway Saints have become a fixture at Hollywood’s Hotel Cafe where performers like John Mayer tend to pop up and play. The Voice airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 8pm on NBC.
