The new HBO comedy series Insecure is about two best friends, Issa and Molly. Both African-American women are single in southern Los Angeles. They’re juggling their professional lives and relationships with men that aren’t always satisfactory. Molly the lawyer is portrayed by Yvonne Orji. Issa Dee, who runs a non-profit youth organization, is portrayed by Issa Rae, co-creator of Insecure. Her co-creator is Larry Wilmore of Comedy Central’s The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore (and former writer on The Bernie Mac Show, In Living Color).
Issa Rae has a killer resume. Prior to launching her popular YouTube series Awkward Black Girl in 2011, Rae graduated from Stanford University in 2007 and received a theater fellowship at The Public Theater. In New York, Rae and her Stanford alum friend Tracy Oliver (Nina on Awkward Black Girl) started taking class together at the New York Film Academy. In 2015, Rae’s memoir The Miss-Adventures of Awkward Black Girl became a New York Times bestseller. Insecure airs Sundays at 10:30pm on HBO.
