Solange Knowles can multitask. The singer and artist also knows that we live in an increasingly graphic-dominated world. Image has always meant a ton to musical artists — think James Brown‘s cape, Frank Sinatra’s jaunty lid, or Beyonce’s and Madonna’s multitude of powerful, sensual styles — but we are surrounded by screens like never before and strong visuals need more than ever to accompany captivating tunes.
That’s why Solange is dropping a big new 112- page digital book project to accompany her big new album. Both are called A Seat at the Table and both use striking imagery to shake up stale iconography. The book celebrates black women and men — but also plain humanity and family — and juxtaposes traditional poses to upend timeworn ideas of masculinity and refocus the idea of powerful femininity — for people of all colors. Plus it has all the lyrics, stylishly arranged in a way that would make E.E. Cummings proud. There are 21 tracks on A Seat at the Table, which brewed for nearly four years before being poured this week.
