FBI Agent Arthur “Art” Gonzales shot his estranged wife Julie Gonzales, 42, in his Strafford, Virginia home in 2013. They were going through a divorce. After an argument, Gonzales says his wife came at him with a knife and in self-defense he shot her four times in the chest. During the police investigation, it was discovered that Gonzales was having a sexual relationship with a fellow FBI employee, a young woman named Cara Kast. One day prior to the shooting, Art Gonzales found provocative photos of Kast with another FBI agent based in Indianapolis. Gonzales’ supervisor, Doug Merel, insists the shooting of Julie Gonzales had nothing to do with Art’s obsession with Cara Kast and everything to do with the knife Art says Julie had.
Gonzales was tried twice for manslaughter but both resulted in hung juries. In 2015, a judge decided there wasn’t enough evidence to find Gonzales guilty of manslaughter. Art Gonzales is a free man. Cara Kast married the other FBI agent and had a child. 48 Hours will air its investigative report on Saturday, August 20 at 9pm on CBS.
