Olympic gymnast Nadia Comaneci was the first gymnast to score a perfect 10 at an Olympic event. She was 14 then, at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal. In total, the teenage Romanian athlete won nine Olympic medals. Over the years, Comaneci got married – to former Olympic gymnast Bart Connor — became a mother (a son, Dylan), and has become a naturalized citizen of the United States. Comaneci and Connor both work as coaches at the Bart Connor Gymnastics Academy in Normal, Oklahoma.
[Nadia Comaneci is the author of the book Letters to a Young Gymnast]
Comaneci was recently named one of the 2016 Great Immigrants by the Carnegie Corporation. She says on Oprah: Where Are They Now? that it’s the first award that she’s received as an immigrant in the US. “I think I’m more emotional now when I get awards just probably because I am an adult, and I understand a lot more than I did when I was a child.” Oprah: Where Are They Now? airs Sundays at 10pm on OWN.
