Donald Trump Jr. — who goes by “Don” — has a speaking spot Tuesday at the Republican National Convention. During his mic check (see below) the smiling son of the GOP presidential candidate tossed out a vintage line from the classic rock comedy This Is Spinal Tap. (Note: Democrats, many of whom are protective of Spinal Tap, won’t be happy. Rob Reiner, Spinal Tap director, is a diehard Democrat who makes Meathead look like Nixon.) Trump Jr. looks positively delighted with his witty rendition of “Hello, Cleveland” — a memorable line from the film.
Trump Jr., an executive VP in the Trump organization, gets his wit, such as it is, not just from his father. (Again, note: Though many people think the Trump campaign is “no longer funny” even HBO comedian John Oliver has called Trump’s work in the field “objectively funny.”) Trump Jr., the eldest of Trump’s children at 38, gets at least some of his wit from his mother Ivana — also the mother of Don’s two full siblings, Ivanka and Eric. The 67-year-old Ivana was married to Donald Trump for 15 years (1977-92). She worked in executive positions in the Trump organization for more than a decade, becoming president of the Trump-owned Plaza Hotel in New York City. During their divorce proceeding Donald Trump contended that Ivana didn’t contribute meaningfully to the organization. Sometimes you have to laugh, as Don has learned.
Couldn’t resist the opportunity to throw out an obscure #spinaltap reference during my mic check. #hellocleveland pic.twitter.com/MMd1ktllT6
