In the Spartan: Ultimate Team Challenge episode “No One Triumphs Alone,” after meeting in a Spartan dating group, singles team up and compete together. One of the challenges involves carrying a gigantic wet log. The five-person team “One Step Ahead” includes Amy Winters, a runner who wears a prosthetic leg. The team is named after the Hicksville, New York company A Step Ahead that customized a prosthetic leg for Winters to wear during competitions.
From a young age, Amy competed in track and distance running. At the age of 22, she was involved in a motorcycle accident which crushed her left leg. After 25 surgeries, her leg was amputated below the knee. Three years after the amputation, she started to run again. In 2004, she ran the Silver Strand Marathon while five months pregnant and finished second in her division. Spartan: Ultimate Team Challenge airs Thursdays at 9pm on NBC.
