Ferocious party man, deep thinker, world’s best comedian, friend of Johnny Depp and author Doug Stanhope talked with Howard Stern about his new book, Digging Up Mother: A Love Story. The title — and his story — are as crazy as the life style Stanhope leads. As the blurb says: “Doug Stanhope is one of the most critically acclaimed and stridently unrepentant comedians of his generation.”
For all the insane partying Stanhope does (and which he learned from his mom), Stern pointed out something else that Stanhope must have inherited through his parental genes, rough as that inheritance has otherwise been: he looks pretty good for all the insanity. Stanhope’s book is a sad, funny, heartfelt tribute to his mother, an alcoholic hoarder who was also her son’s biggest fan. It also tells the story of the man Ricky Gervais calls the “most important stand-up working today.” Digging Up Mother: A Love Story is currently #3 on the Amazon bestseller list for comedy. Johnny Depp wrote the Foreward. There’s an excerpt here.
