Showing Roots is a Lifetime movie set in the South in 1977, the same year the TV mini-series Roots aired on national TV. “I’ve never seen anything like that on TV before,” says beauty parlor worker Pearl (who is black). Nor had anyone else. Watching Roots inspires Pearl and her fellow co-worker, Violet (who is white), to open an integrated hair salon in their small town. The people who object to Violet (Maggie Grace) and Pearl’s (Uzo Aduba) shop also object to white construction supervisor Henry, who hires black men to work with white men on a job site.
Henry is portrayed by Adam Brody. He’s known for his roles on Neil LaBute’s DirecTV series Billy & Billie (Billy Jones), House of Lies (Nate Hyatt), Burning Love (Max), Good Vibes (Woodie), The O.C. (Seth Cohen), Gilmore Girls (Dave Rygalski), and MTV’s Now What? (Zack), among others. Brody is also recognized for his roles in the films Sleeping with Other People (Sam), Think Like a Man (Isaac), Scream 4 (Deputy Hoss), and Mr. & Mrs. Smith (Benjamin Danz) with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Brody will appear in Dax Shepard’s 2017 film CHiPs. Showing Roots will premiere on Lifetime on Thursday, May 26 at 10pm.
— A remake of Roots starring Forest Whitaker, Laurence Fishburne, and Anna Paquin, will air on The History Channel on Monday, May 30 at 9pm. See trailer below.
