On The Carmichael Show episode “Ex Con,” Jerrod’s (Jerrod Carmichael) childhood friend is released from jail after serving 10 years for dealing drugs. His release prompts a discussion among the Carmichael family about the prison system and Jerrod “must face how much his life has changed, and an idealistic viewpoint clashes with realist attitudes.”
Jerrod’s friend is portrayed by Antwon Tanner. He’s known for his roles on Moesha and its spinoff The Parkers (Michael), Boston Public (Kevin Jackson), One Tree Hill (Antwon “Skills” Taylor), and most recently Black Jesus (Jason). Tanner is also recognized for his role as Worm in the 2005 film Coach Carter with Samuel L. Jackson. Tanner did spend time in jail. In 2009, Tanner pleaded guilty to selling Society Security numbers for $10,000. He served his three-month sentence in a Brooklyn jail in 2010. The Carmichael Show airs Sundays at 9pm on NBC.
