In the When Calls the Heart episode “Hearts in Question,” Jack (Daniel Lissing) receives a surprise visit from his mother Charlotte (guest star Brooke Shields). Shields says her character is inspired by Annie Oakley. Charlotte’s rough and tumble ways are a stark contrast to the delicateness of Jack’s girlfriend Elizabeth (Erin Krakow) which proves to be very funny. Especially as the two women become roommates. Elizabeth invites Charlotte to stay in her guest room.
After settling into the room, Charlotte tries to connect with Elizabeth by saying: “I see you don’t like to dust any more than I do.” (Elizabeth admits to dusting earlier that day.) Charlotte, who makes all of her own clothing, then asks if Elizabeth if she sews. (Elizabeth once sewed a pillowcase). The awkward and funny exchange continues and Shields delivers a line about lard with aplomb. When Calls the Heart airs Sundays at 9pm on Hallmark.
