After years of almost happening, it’s finally happening. There will be an adaptation of Stephen King‘s magnum opus, The Dark Tower
. Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey have been confirmed to star in a movie adaptation of the fantasy series of novels. Elba will play Roland Deschain, aka the Gunslinger, and McConaughey will portray his nemesis, the Man in Black. Nikolaj Arcel will direct, with shooting set to begin in South Africa shortly.
Over the years, there have been several attempts to bring the story to the big and small screen. “The thing is, it’s been a looong trip from the books to the film,” King tells Entertainment Weekly. “When you think about it, I started these stories as a senior in college, sitting in a little sh-tty cabin beside the river in Maine, and finally this thing is actually in pre-production now. I’m delighted, and I’m a little bit surprised.” The Dark Tower books
are set in a mystical land, Mid-World, and Roland Deschain is “a sort of frontiersman knight whose primary weapon is not a sword but a pair of revolvers,” reports EW. “He’s on a quest to save his decaying world by reaching the tower that stands at the nexus point in time and space.”
