Sonika Vaid is the college student from Massachusetts who’s competing on the fifteenth and final season of American Idol. When the first American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson returned to the show to judge for one episode, Vaid had to follow powerhouse La’Porsha Renae, whom Clarkson predicted as the winner of the show. But Clarkson was impressed with Vaid, too. Now both Vaid and Renae are vying for a slot on the Top 8 list.
To help move her from the Top 10 to the Top 8, Vaid is turning to the Idol winner well again. For her audition, Vaid sang Carrie Underwood’s “Look at Me”. On March 3, Vaid will sing Clarkson’s 2004 ultimate breakup song, “Since U Been Gone.” Although the song was written by two men, Max Martin and and Lukasz “Dr. Luke” Gottwald, it’s about a woman who’s relieved that her relationship is over. “Nothing packs more romantic rage than the original Idol’s 2004 kiss-off to a coldhearted ex,” Entertainment Weekly wrote when it added the song to its end-of-the-decade “best-of” list. “Can anyone do bitter better?” Vaid is going to try. American Idol airs Thursdays at 8pm on FOX.
