In a wildly emotional performance on last week’s American Idol, superstar and first American Idol Kelly Clarkson touched hearts singing “Piece by Piece.” It’s a devastating song on any night, and Clarkson doesn’t shy away from giving it the emotional punch it deserves — painful as that may be. But on the Idol night, Clarkson actually wept on stage. Thing is, she didn’t mean to. It was just a perfect emotional storm, she told Elvis Duran on the Z100 Morning Show.
“I was just super screwed!” is the way Clarkson described her emotional state. “It was just the last time I was on Idol and my little kid is running around the same hallways that I was running around at 19.” Clarkson won the Idol crown back in 2002. The crying went over like gangbusters — the audience wept as well and you’d be forgiven for thinking it was an orchestrated Hollywood moment. But it wasn’t. Clarkson’s sad song about her absentee father obviously moves her and a lot of people, but she said “I’m so embarrassed” about crying. She also said she was a little disturbed that the song touched so many people. “I’m excited to be a vessel for a message that touches people,” Clarkson said, “But at the same time I’m like, God, I wish it didn’t touch that many people.”
