Husband and wife Gary and Jan Tyrrell were found dead in their Springfield, Missouri home on May 1, 2014. Gary, 60, was shot twice. Jan, 61, was bludgeoned with a rare engraved walrus tusk. Gary Tyrrell was a collector of rare objects including valuable coins. Shortly before the Tyrrells were found dead, Gary’s friend Mark Porter who had “gambling issues” asked Gary for a $250,000 loan. One day after the Tyrrells were discovered, Porter sold $18,000 worth of silver coins to a local shop.
Porter pleaded guilty to both murders and is serving two consecutive life sentences. Dateline NBC will air its investigative report about “The Collector” on February 21 at 7pm.
