In the TV movie The Breaks, three young friends – Nikki, David, and Deevee – are trying their best to break into the emerging hip-hop scene in New York in the summer of 1990. Nikki Jones (Afton Williamson) proves her dedication to the genre by giving up a scholarship to law school in order to take an internship at record label Fouray Entertainment. Her boyfriend David Aaron (David Call) has a way in — his father George “Juggy” Aaron is an old school manager “from the days of payola” — but David wants to make it own his own. The movie is based on Dan Charnas’ 2011 book The Big Payback.
