The 48 Hours Live to Tell episode “My Name Is Victoria” tells the story of a 19-year-old California woman who was abducted outside of her apartment building in Huntington Beach, California. She was thrown into the truck of a car, later tortured and raped repeatedly by two men on Christmas Eve in 1990. She escaped and survived but her case went cold until, after 18 years, DNA evidence led police to actor Joe Son. Born Joseph Hyungmin Son in South Korea, he is best known for his role as Random Task in the film Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, a parody of the James Bond character Oddjob.
Son and his high school friend Santiago Gaitan were arrested but the statute of limitations for rape and kidnapping had expired. Son was then charged with conspiracy to commit torture and murder, crimes which have no statute of limitation. In 2011, Gaitan pleaded guilty to kidnapping and other charges and was sentenced to 17 years in prison. Son was sentenced to life in prison. One month after his sentence, Son was accused of killing his cellmate, a sex offender. Son was found guilty of the murder. Son is currently housed in Salinas Valley State Prison. 48 Hours: Live to Tell: My Name is Victoria will air January 23 at 10pm on CBS.
