Actress Charlotte Rampling has weighed in on the #OscarSoWhite controversy, saying that the proposed boycott of this year’s Academy Awards by black actors and filmmakers is racist against white people. Rampling, nominated for her performance in 45 Years, speaking to France’s Radio 1, commented on the fact that all of this year’s acting nominees are white. “One can never really know, perhaps the black actors did not deserve to make the final list … Do we have to take from this that there should be lots of minorities everywhere?”
Meanwhile, Will Smith has confirmed that he will not be attending the Oscars. Earlier this week, Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett-Smith was one of the first to call for a boycott. “My wife’s not going. It would be awkward for me to show up with Charlize (Theron),” Smith told ABC’s Good Morning America on Thursday. “We’ve discussed it, but at this current time, we’re uncomfortable to stand there and say this is OK.”
