The Satanic Temple of Detroit is a non-theistic religious organization dedicated to Satanic practice, the promotion of Satanic rights and individual liberty. TST defines a Satanist as one who adheres “to the principles of individual sovereignty and rejection of tyrannical authority.” When the state’s Capitol commission approved what TST calls local Ted Cruz supporters’ request to display a “live Nativity” at the Capitol, TST proposed its own display titled “Snaketivity.” (Throwing a snake into the works of an idyllic scene is not a new idea.) If approved, TST’s Satanic ceremony will be held at the Capitol on Saturday, December 19 at 8pm. It won’t be the first time local Christians and Satanists have found themselves yelling at each other. In July, TST unveiled a 9-foot-tall goat-headed statue. Christians held a mass to protest. Plus, the Satanists had a “Snaketivity” last year.
The Satanic Temple of Detroit encourages all interested individuals to apply to display their own displays on the Capitol lawn. Here’s the 4-page application. The Satanic Temple of Detroit will be featured on This is Life with Lisa Ling on CNN on December 13 at 9pm.
