The 91-year-old actress Cicely Tyson is being honored at the 38th Annual Kennedy Center Honors. She’s best known for her roles as Rebecca Morgan in the 1972 film Sounder (she was nominated for both an Academy Award for Best Actress and the Golden Globe Award). Two years later she starred in The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman. On Broadway, she’s best known for her role as Carrie Watts in the play The Trip to Bountiful (she won a Tony). At the Kennedy Center, best-selling gospel singer CeCe Winans will sing the hymn “Blessed Assurance” which Tyson sang in the play.

On a personal note, Tyson married just once. In 1981 she married world-renowned jazz trumpeter Miles Davis. The ceremony took place at the home of actor Bill Cosby who served as the Best Man. The talented couple divorced in 1988, just three years before Davis’ death.
