Comedian Amy Schumer packs a punch along with her punchlines. That’s what makes her not just popular but relevant. The truth isn’t always funny, yet coming from Schumer it always seems funny. Then there’s that echo just beyond the laughter that repeats the hard truth of what Schumer says. The Trainwreck star puts the hit in hits home.
Recently at the Women’s Media Center Awards, which honors women “Game Changers” in media and entertainment, Schumer took the stage surrounded by some of the coolest women on the planet. Schumer looked around the room at Gloria Steinem, Christiane Amanpour, Lindy West, Judy Woodruff, and more. Schumer, who has famously pointed out that Sally Field was cast as Tom Hanks’ love interest (Punchline) and later, as his mother (Forrest Gump), has practically turned the great Sally Field into a meme for feminism. (Of course, Field did most of the groundbreaking work herself.) In her speech, Schumer waved her Field flag with glee and pride. Talking about how women’s magazines talk down to women, Schumer declared simply: “Sally Field is here. So fuck you guys.” Everybody in the audience knew what she meant.
