Arizona death row inmate Joseph Wood (who murdered his ex-girlfriend Debra Dietz and her father Eugene) was executed by lethal injection on July 23, 2014. His execution is claimed to be “the longest execution in US history” as it took nearly two hours for Wood to die. Arizona’s most recent execution before Wood took 17 minutes. Wood was injected 15 times. Each injection contained 750mg each of midazolam and hydromorphone. According to The Guardian, that’s “15 times the amounts called for in the state’s execution protocol.”

60 Minutes correspondent Bill Whitaker investigates the executions of Wood and escaped convict and murderer Jeffrey Landgergain who was executed in 2010 by drugs that were illegally purchased by the state of Arizona. The drugs came from a supplier operating out of driving school in London. “The State of Arizona knew or should have known that it was illegal to import these drugs,” Bill Whitaker says to Arizona’s current Attorney General Mark Brnovich, who reminds Whitaker that he was not in office when the two executions took place. Whitaker’s investigation will air on 60 Minutes on November 29 at 7:30pm on CBS.
