Hollywood legend Sylvester Stallone is enjoying a wave of rave reviews for Creed. The writer, director and star of the original 1977 movie Rocky plays a trainer in Creed. The protagonist of Creed is Adonis (portrayed by Michael B. Jordan), who discovers after a hard upbringing that he is the illegitimate son of the late former champ Apollo Creed, Rocky’s nemesis turned friend.
In Creed, Stallone is 38 years older than when he first played Rocky but Stallone still knows how to make an audience smile. There’s so much history between Stallone and the audience — especially with this character that’s become a cultural touchstone — that Stallone has to treat the legend with care. Critics are saying he succeeds. When Rocky wakes Adonis for his first day of training, he does what Ben Travers at Indiewire calls that “incomparably adorable dance routine” that has critics speculating that Stallone will garner a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Academy Awards. Wait, no best supporting actor?
