Tennis star Ryan Sweeting, who captured the heart of America’s sweetheart Kaley Cuoco, won the US Open Junior championship when he was just 13. The 16-year ATP veteran never reached such dizzying heights again, though Sweeting rose briefly to No. 67 in the world after his lone ATP victory in 2011. Tennis, unlike professional team sports, is a tough way to make a living if you’re not winning. But Sweeting seemed to be doing fine anyway. He married Kaley Cuoco during a period when it was reported that Sweeting had hardly won any prize money at all.

Now sad word out of Hollywood is that the Sweeting Cuoco marriage, which had seemed impervious (mostly according to Kaley’s social media accounts) to disruption, will end in divorce after less than two years. Money and status are unspoken issues here, but as Sweeting’s earning power faded (and his career met its natural limits with age), Kaley Cuoco’s earning power soared. She signed a massive contract last summer paying the Big Bang Theory star some $90 million.
