In the second piece of Ridley Scott-related sci-fi news this week, the director has announced that there will be a total of four Prometheus films. German website Film Futter is reporting the exclusive story that Scott — currently promoting The Martian — plans on making three sequels to his much-maligned, odd prequel to the Alien franchise.

The director of the original Alien says that Prometheus 2 won’t tie in to the universe of Alien, but that by the fourth movie we can expect a connection between the two franchises. “The whole point [of the Prometheus films] is to explain the Alien franchise and how and why the creation of the aliens. I always thought of the Alien as kind of a piece of bacterial warfare. I always thought that that original ship, which I call the Croissant, was a battleship, holding these biomechanoid creatures that were all about destruction.” Somewhat confusingly, there is another, legitimate film in the Alien franchise in the works, one which will bring back Sigourney Weaver as Ripley.
