Lifetime’s TV movie Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B chronicled the life of the singer from her first TV appearance on Star Search to her tragic death at 22 in a plane crash. There was controversy around the film. TV talk show host Wendy Williams was the producer and she failed to get the blessing of Aaliyah’s family who denied Lifetime from using “any of the music, or any of the photographs and videos” that they own.
