Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson plays the protagonist of the new HBO show Ballers. His character, Spencer, is a retired NFL player who’s now a financial advisor to players. One of his clients is wide receiver Ricky Jerret who’s portrayed by John David Washington, son of Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington. He’s not the only “famous son” on the set.
Sports agent Jason is portrayed by Troy Garity, son of Oscar-winning actress Jane Fonda. His father is political activist Tom Hayden. They named Troy after the Vietnamese resistance leader Nguyen Van Troi. His professional name Garity is from his paternal grandmother. Unlike for John David Washington, Ballers isn’t Garity’s acting debut. He’s best known for his roles as Isaac Rosenberg in the Barbershop movies and as Barry Winchell in the film Soldier’s Girl, for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe. Ballers airs Sundays at 10pm on HBO.
