This might be good news for Chris Pratt – whose star is definitely on the ascent – or it might mean he has really big shoes to fill. If he does indeed get cast as archaeologist/adventurer Indiana Jones in a proposed reboot of the series, then he can know he is taking on the part of The Greatest Movie Character of All Time. To find out which movie characters were the most beloved, Empire magazine surveyed 10,000 film fans. Dr. Jones tops the list, ahead of James Bond, Han Solo, and Batman. Only one female character made the Top Ten: the Alien franchise’s Ellen Ripley.
As the Guardian points out, the popularity of Jones would suggest there is definitely an appetite for a new movie in the series. “The poll result comes as something of a shock, given that plans for a new Indiana Jones movie seem to be on the back burner at Disney. The studio bought Lucasfilm for $4.05bn in October 2012, but has moved forward with proposals for a new series of Star Wars movies rather than focusing on the swashbuckling archeologist.” What strikes me about the Top Ten is that the vast majority of characters appear in franchises, and several have been played by different actors, which suggests there is much cross-generational appeal to the likes of James Bond and Batman. Only two characters are from standalone films: Fight Club‘s Tyler Durden and The Big Lebowski‘s The Dude.
