James “Jimmy” Dougherty was 20 years old when he met 15-year-old Marilyn Monroe, who went then by her birth name, Norma Jeane Baker. They dated for awhile. And then Monroe’s foster mother suggested that Dougherty marry Norma Jeane who “otherwise may have had to return to an orphanage.” They married in 1942. Dougherty joined the US Merchant Marine and was sent overseas. While he was away in China, Norma Jeane filed for divorce in 1946.

Jimmy remarried a year later and joined the Los Angeles Police Department. He had three daughters with his second wife (1947-1972). He married a third time in 1974 to a woman named Rita Lambert. They were married until her death in 2003. Dougherty died in 2005 due to complications related to leukemia. He was 84.
