Singer/songwriter James Taylor went to high school in the Boston suburb of Milton in the 1960s. He says it was his father and grandmother who turned him into a Boston Red Sox fan. After the Red Sox won the 2004 World Series, Taylor said he came up with the music for his new single “Angels of Fenway.” But the lyrics came much later. He said he had to “sequester himself away for one week at a time until the words were on paper.”
Taylor sang the song for the first time at Fenway Park on Sunday night before the Red Sox took on the New York Yankees. Yanks won 4-2. The L probably didn’t have anything to do with Taylor’s tune — it’s not like James Taylor traded Babe Ruth or something. But Red Sox fans are susceptible to believing in curses and the occasional jinx. It wasn’t Taylor’s first time performing at the famous ballpark, nor will it be his last. He’s performing a Fenway concert on August 6 with Bonnie Raitt.
